Kick start the day with writing

the artist's way

The first time I came across the idea that a day could be started with writing was over ten years ago, when I read Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s way. In it, she advises on the benefits of Morning Pages.

Morning pages are just a way to kick start the day for people who want to be creative, and especially if they want to be writers. It’s a simple concept. Just write three pages about anything. Free-flow writing with no worrying about quality. The object of this practice is to break through any writing block that might be clogging the creative juices, allowing them to flow free and light.

There was a time in my life when I wrote morning pages. It did help me. But it often took longer than fifteen minutes, because I often took too long to think about what I was writing. Procrastination…

But in principle, morning pages are a good thing. It is helpful to have a writing project first up. It does free you up to continue with other writing. It is like breaking the seal, taking the lid off the jar, opening that divine box of chocolates and just making a start.

For the most part, I do some kind of morning-pages-like activity. Whether it’s the pages as Cameron envisaged, or some other type of writing. Like blogging.

I highly recommend Cameron’s books on creativity and writing because they debunk the myths around these very endeavours. Being creative is not difficult, selective, or exclusive. It is something that is available to all of us who want to explore possibilities and enter a different space.
