What stops us writing 2

railway tracks

I wrote previously about all the emotional baggage that stops one from writing a) as much as they should, and b) what they actually want to write, i.e., without the oppression of the inner censor. I wrote about this inner censor in Doldrums, which in that post, I referred to as a vampire.

I had made a personal commitment to writing eight posts a month, reasoning that two a week is a healthy amount of writing to do. But month after month, I am having trouble getting the posts done in a smooth, flowing routine. This morning, I realised why.

It’s the damn pictures!

Every time I think about writing a post, I realise I don’t have a suitable image and I consequently waste some time (from a little to way more than it’s worth) finding the right subject, photographing it, then doing all the usual fiddling about that gets the photo from my phone, saved to my computer etc. etc. etc.

So it’s this kind of crap that stalls writers. This is my version of stalling. I am sure every writer has their own particular brand, with which they wrestle on a regular basis.

Which brings me to the decision that the image must come second. It’s nice if it fits in with the theme of the post, sure, but if it doesn’t, should it really stop me doing the writing? From now on, if my images don’t really match my posts, it will be up to the reader to figure out a connection. There may not be one. And if there isn’t, so be it.

For this blog, I’ve chosen an image of railway tracks. I’m sure I can come up with a connection. I can attach some meaning between the image and the subject of this post. And if not, then…

The writing is what matters. For the sake of this blog, the images are just decoration.
